Why do dogs like bad smells?

Help Us to keep our shelter

People who have shared with dogs know that they love natural odors, especially strong odors such as dead animals or feces, they are not only interested in also wallowing in these odors. This is natural for dogs, since their sense of smell and brain connections are different from ours, which means that the smells that seem unpleasant to us seem fascinating to dogs.

Dogs like to have this type of odor impregnated for multiple reasons, some of which are due to their ancestors, it is known that dogs are carnivorous animals and hunters, these strong odors helped them hide their own scent from their prey and that would be easier to catch.

It is also a way to communicate with other dogs, in their ancestors they had packs and each dog carried information about findings in their environment in this way they could get fast food (Manjón 2019)

Almost no dog likes morning baths, this is mainly because the dog does not feel dirty, and the odors from people’s toiletries are uncomfortable as they are too strong and synthetic, that’s why after a bathroom they tend to look for any strong natural scent to remove the smell of soaps.

In other cases they do it to protect their scalp, some swamps or feces help them keep their fur hydrated.

And the last simplest reason is that many dogs only like these smells, there is nothing deep down that makes them behave like this, they just love strong smells (Manjón 2019).

This type of behavior shows that dogs still have a lot of information from their ancestors and they will always prefer natural environments, therefore it is very important to understand that they are animals that need to develop their instincts, they must be allowed to behave like dogs, although sometimes their behaviors seem a bit strange
